Websites that have served me well! Many sites require a user id or login, but most of them are free Most of the paid sites will let you register, and load in details for free.
The above websites are the main websites that I utilise for my particular Family Research. Some are general, others are specific. Some are specific to a region or interest. Depending on the site, in many cases, you can only get so far, without paying for additional access, and / or certificates. However, some sites may give you much of the information you need for that particular search. Of course, there are infinitely more sites, and if you find one worthy of sharing, feel free to let me know. If any of the links stop working, once again, please let me know.
Other Sites
Often quirky, many of these sites are interest or topic specific. Their quality can vary from the heartbreakingly Amateurish to the Very Professional. Don't dismiss ANY of them lightly. Whilst the more popular unpaid sites get to the "Bones" of your research, and the Paid sites add the "Meat", these other sites add seasoning, character, substance and flavour, to what can be a very dry meal. For those less interested in family history, genealogy is a "Bland" topic; names and dates are often just a blur and mean nothing to them, and it is only the Events and Stories (the juicier the better) that pique their interest. In other words, make it interesting. When relaying what you've found to those members of your family who are less interested, Spice up the story with both the Truth of what you've found and some historical, social, or regional context. When it comes the time that you want to write and Publish your Family History, you will be glad you've down all the extra research to enrich your Family Story.
DNA Testing - Is it worthwhile? In a word - Yes Will it yield immediate results? In some cases, Yes. In lots of cases and my family's case, No? I had to wait several years for a "close" YDNA match. I have a very good understanding of the specificity of the DNA Products being offered, and what you can expect in return, so ask me anything in the Comments section if you're considering testing
Paid sites
Okay, firstly let me say, I have no affiliation with any organisation or site, paid or unpaid. Secondly, there are definitely sites that I personally prefer, and there are sites that I personally feel have more (or less) integrity than others. Especially when it comes to value, cost, accessibility and transparency. I still occasionally utilise some of the sites that I feel have "burnt" me in one way or another, (the sales pitch didn't match the reality of what they did and did not provide), I just no longer pay for any of their paid services. I will often use a few of the better websites (paid and unpaid) at the same time whilst researching
Join a Family History Society or Forum
Of all the Internet and social media sites out there in Cyberspace, the Family History sites seem to be the most well mannered and respectful of the Lot. Most are well managed and have a Zero tolerance for bullying, aggressive and inappropriate behaviour. Having said that, you still have to be very mindful of protecting the interests of the Living by not disclosing any personal or other information that could endanger someone's safety. There is also a big difference between healthy debate, and aggressive, opinionated bullying and arrogance. Don't be guilty of the latter, and don't put up with it either. The purpose of these Societies and Forums is to expand knowledge and assist each other in your research endeavours. They are not a place for Religion versus science debates, or for you to vent one's personal character assassinations on another. This is bullying. Whilst it's okay to disagree with someone, just ensure you do it in a tactful, reasonable and respectful manner. If you see a situation escalating, tell the other person to stop. Recognise whether it's you or them (or both of you) that's the aggressor. If the other party doesn't stop, you be the one to cease all communication with them and report the offence to the Moderator (and/or Police, if it's serious enough.and the situation warrants it).
